Nepotism constitutes yet another paradigm that clings to this world like an insatiable parasite, supporting the power elite and ensuring their survival. No matter how insipid their offspring are, they will always have an advantage over you. What this means is that spoiled, privileged children will continue the legacy of the bane of humanity — the senior dinosaurs and corporate tycoons. If you believe in equal opportunity, then you ought to utterly oppose nepotism.
Typically, nepotism occurs when potential job candidates are chosen based on who their relatives are, not who they are and what they’re good at. It is, however, one of the most neglected aspects of corruption nowadays, though it affects us enormously. How would you feel if you were rejected over some big-shot businessman’s brain-dead son? After all, you know you’re better suited for the career and you simply can’t fathom the meaning of this.
Thus, the law of the jungle effectively slithers its way through the nooks and crannies of society, poisoning the good and exacerbating the evil; you’re either one of them, or you’re not. Who’s to give the verdict is still unknown to us. What we get is a slow but steady demise of the Homo sapiens, or Homo faber, whichever you prefer to use.
Advocates of nepotism claim that success is mostly based on “networking” and getting to know people; but in an ideal Meritocratic world the smartest and the most hard-working should be rewarded, not the most charming or persuasive. Our parents used to tell us that we had to work hard to get what we want. Reality check: nepotism is knocking on your door. Despite the countless hours of work you’ve invested in a certain field, you stand no chance against the privileged.
Romania has recently evoked a multitude of relevant cases. Some of our nominees are as follows: Crin Antonescu and Victor Ponta, both significant members of a political party denominated USL (Social-Liberal Union).
Mr. Antonescu and Mr. Ponta (who has also stolen his PhD Law thesis, a crime evinced by international academic conferences in Israel and France) have both collaborated in getting their trophy wives on the currently pivotal political podium that is constantly mocked on Romania’s most ubiquitous T.V. channels. The media is currently divided into two sides: those who support the dreadful right wing and those who are paid to endorse the idiocy of the left wing. Ultimately, Romanian citizens are erroneously led to believe that they have a choice when they clearly do not — quite reminiscent of the Obama/Romney dispute. There’s more, however: president Traian Basescu’s fashion-obsessed Elena has somehow managed to enter the European Parliament as an independent delegate. This only goes to show how far the putrescent trail goes, disseminating across the European Union as well. Mr. Remus Procopie won’t be spared from similar accusations either, especially due to his humiliating public statement wherein he made a major grammatical error in Romanian. Ironically enough, he’s our minister of education. Of course, the lapse stirred some controversy, but it’s already been washed away by USL and their affiliates.
These examples don’t even begin to show how much nepotism is tainting the world. Most of us, however, think that governments in general are incompetent and incredibly stupid; well, now you know why. Inept Johnny McGee is rocking his father’s ex-throne while poor ol’ Daniel’s wondering why he wasn’t chosen, despite his overqualified status. Sadly, politicians are experts when it comes to covering their tracks and lurking in the shadows, much like serial killers — two characters that are bizarrely linked to each other as regards their traits and perspectives.
As Elie Wiesel once said, “To remain silent and indifferent is the greatest sin of all.” If you feel like you’ve been wronged, don’t just sit there and lament childishly; do something about it. If we are to make a change, then we’d better not stay put any longer. If you don’t want to be a victim of nepotism, then make sure you don’t. Fight back.
